Medibank Health Solutions recommend that you use a professional interpreter if your spoken English is not adequate to discuss your medical details with our doctor.

There are a number of options available to you:

  • You can use a professional interpreting service provider, such as the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National or other interpreting service provider. These organisations charge for their services.
  • You can bring an adult friend or family member who you are confident will interpret for you in an appropriate and confidential manner.  The use of children to interpret is not appropriate.
  • If you are eligible for a funded interpreter you can use TIS National or an interpreter from the Australian Red Cross or other suitably-funded refugee support group. 

If you and our doctor have difficulties communicating, the medical may not proceed.


You may wish to bring an adult friend or adult family member to be with you in the doctor's room when you are being examined.  

If you do not have an adult friend or adult family member who is able to come with you to the appointment, and you would like someone to be with you when you see the doctor, please call 1300 244 792 to request a chaperone.
