Visa medicals

We provide visa medicals in Australia for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). You might know us by our old name - Health Services Australia or HSA.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) only accepts visa applicant medical examinations conducted by Medibank Health Solutions.

You are able to make a visa medical appointment with us for a permanent visa, temporary visa or a student visa.  There are different medical examinations for each visa type.  It is your responsibility to make sure that you book an appointment for the right visa type.

This website is intended to give you general information on the different requirements.  For more detailed advice, please contact DIAC on 131 881 or contact your case officer.

How do I make an appointment for a visa medical?

You can make an appointment online (refer below) or by calling 1300 361 046

Costs associated with health examinations are the responsibility of the applicant.  Click here for information on visa medical fees.   You will not be able to make any changes to appointment made online. To make a change, call  1300 361 046.

DIAC request that you know the visa subclass you are applying for at the time of your examination.  If you do not know the subclass, we will be unable to proceed with your examination.

Using an interpreter

DIAC and Medibank Health Solutions recommend that you use a professional interpreter if your spoken English is not adequate to discuss your medical details with our doctor.

There are a number of options available to you:

  • You can use a professional interpreting service provider, such as the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National or other interpreting service provider. These organisations charge for their services.
  • You can bring an appropriate person who you are confident will interpret for you in an appropriate and confidential manner.  DIAC advises that the use of children to translate or interpret should be avoided.
  • If you are eligible for a funded interpreter you can use TIS National or an interpreter from the Australian Red Cross or other suitably-funded refugee support group.  If you are unsure whether you are eligible for this service please check with your DIAC case officer or your nearest DIAC office

If you and our doctor have difficulties communicating, the medical may not proceed

Can I make an appointment online?

You can make your visa medical appointment online except if you want an appointment for:

  • a carer visa application medical.
  • a General Skilled Migrant (GSM) application where you will need a booking number.
  • appointments in Tasmania.
  • appointments regional and remote areas of mainland Australia.
  • appointments for families. Our online appointment service allows you to make only one appointment at a time. These are separate appointment dates and times and may not be suitable if you need appointments for several family members on the same day.
  • if you had a Chest X-Ray as part of a visa medical appointment with Medibank Health Solutions (or Health Services Australia) in the past 12 months.
  • if you are studying to become a health worker - that is, a doctor, dentist, paramedic or nurse.

To make an appointment for these exceptions, please call 1300 361 046
