APPEAL literacy program

Together with the University of Queensland's Literacy for Life team we are working to identify and address adult literacy at work.

APPEAL - Applying Phonological Processing to Enable Adult Literacy At Work

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 4228.0 Australian Literacy and Life Skills Survey (2006) sought to identify and measure literacy. The research  found that  survey participants not in the labour force tended to lack the minimum literacy required to meet the complex demands of everyday life and work in the emerging knowledge-based economy.

The APPEAL Literacy for Life program addresses the literacy needs of those preparing for work or experiencing literacy-related difficulties at work.

Our allied health professionals, who have trained with the University of Queensland Literacy for Life Team, deliver the program.  Literacy for Life Team speech pathologists and educators provide our professionals with ongoing advisory support, specialised consultancy for individual clients and  ongoing data collection for program review and future research.

An individualised program is developed for each individual, based on their need.  Typically, the program includes learning activities that provide the underlying framework for reading and writing. The program also includes instruction in areas such as grammatical construction, punctuation, reading, and written language to ensure that the foundation skills generalise into functional workplace literacy.
