Need help with English?
DIAC and Medibank Health Solutions recommend that you use a professional interpreter if your spoken English is not adequate to discuss your medical details with our doctor.
There are a number of options available to you:
- You can use a professional interpreting service provider, such as the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National or other interpreting service provider. These organisations charge for their services.
- You can bring an appropriate person who you are confident will interpret for you in an appropriate and confidential manner. DIAC advises that the use of children to translate or interpret should be avoided.
- If you are eligible for a funded interpreter you can use TIS National or an interpreter from the Australian Red Cross or other suitably-funded refugee support group. If you are unsure whether you are eligible for this service please check with your DIAC case officer or your nearest DIAC office.
If you and our doctor have difficulties communicating, the medical may not proceed.
